THOUSANDS of homes are set to be built on greenbelt land under plans being considered by council chiefs.
Durham City is in line for 5,000 new homes under the County Durham Plan, the county council’s multimillion-pound scheme to transform the county, creating 29,000 new homes and 16,000 jobs.
Planning chiefs identified seven potential sites for housing in Durham City as part of the masterplan last year, and have now revealed their three preferred options.
Sites include two near the A167 north of Durham, one at Sniperley and one near the Arniston Centre. The third option is land near Sherburn Road Estate.
Further consultation will now take place before a final decision is made.
Stuart Timmiss, head of planning at the council, said: “We’re in challenging times. We want to maximise opportunities in the county and bring in jobs and houses.”
