Houghton Harrier Lee Dover claims eighth place in Port of Blyth 10k Road Race

They had the first three runners home in Sam Hancox (31min 53sec), Karl Taylor (32.48) and Over-40 Veteran John Butters third (33.09).

Former Sunderland Harrier Sparrow Morley, now back with Tyne Bridge Harriers, was fourth (33.18).

There also was some joy for local runners, with Houghton Harrier Lee Dover leading the way in eighth (34.18) in a field of nearly 600.

Sunderland Harrier Over-45 Micky Thompson finished 16th, just missing out on being first in his category.

The Seaham man clocked 35.12, just one place behind Crook’s Over-45 Chris Auld, who recorded 35.04.

Thompson’s clubmate, Darren Stokoe, finished 12th Over-45 in 71st place (39.15).

Washington Athletics Club’s top man, Tim Jones, finished 25th (36.18) and Sunderland Stroller Luke McCormack was 33rd (36.53).

Strollers training partners Derek Wright and Dawn Elliott impressed with performances in their category.

Elliott won the Over-55 Women’s title (47.53) and Wright was second Over-65 (47.33).

Sunderland Strollers and Sunderland Harriers had a number of runners in yesterday’s Manchester Marathon, on what is regarded as a fast course.

The Strollers led the way with Chris Dwyer in 2.53.15, then came Over-50 Ritchie Gerry for fifth in his category (2.53.28) followed by Over-50 Chris Duke (3.18.50), Over-50 Brian Carroll (3.30.37), John Cook (3.34 23.), Glyn Davies (3.37.55) and Liam Crosby (3.50.35).

Sunderland Harriers had Steven Duffy with 2.58.54, Richard Borrowdale, under three hours for the first time (2.59.23), Over-45 Steven Gordon (3.06.50), Over-45 Darren Dodd (3.10.31) and Over-40 Barry Marlee (3.34.37).

Sunderland Harrier Michael Wilson showed he is in good form going into the track season.

Based at New Mexico State University in Albuquerque, on an athletic scholarship, the former Northern 800m champion smashed his personal best for 400m in the Don Kirby Tailwind Open.

Wilson finished third in his event in a time of 49.96sec to chop just over three seconds off his previous fastest, set in 2011.
