Houghton Feast Parade brings community out in force
This year’s event had as its theme The Greatest Show - and it certainly lived up to its name.
The 10-day celebration began on Friday night with the annual Tattoo and Opening Ceremony, featuring Houghton Pipe Band with dancers, Houghton Area Youth Brass Band and the new Houghton Feast Children’s Choir.

The opening night was followed yesterday by the community parade, which took half an hour to wend its way down Newbottle Street.
The colourful community production included local schoolchildren in fancy dress, the pipes and drums, classic cars, marching musical bands, Billy the Clown, Bernard Gilpin and the wild boar, the Zazz dancers and a vintage steam vehicle.
The procession starts at Houghton Library car park and will travel along Newbottle Street into the Broadway, before ending at the Dairy Lane entrance to Rectory Park.
The fun continued today with ‘Geek Feast’ - Houghton’s first sci-fi and fantasy convention, at the Sports and Wellness Centre in Station Road.
