Speakers at the Rotary Club were past District Governor David Sadler of Saltburn Rotary Club, a retired senior police officer, and his wife Ann. They gave an illustrated talk about their visit to India with a Rotary international tour with other Rotarians from around the world to coincide with Indian National Immunisation Day in 2015. They viewed the progress of the world project by Rotary, ‘End Polio Now’, which is now almost completed, to eliminate polio around the world. Black Spots, helped by funds by the Bill Gates Foundation, where £1 can provide protection for six children with the polio vaccine, and they actually helped with the immunisations. Bob Hodgson from the Houghton Club offered a vote of thanks to David and Ann on their hard work and dedication to the project.

Shiney Row St Oswald’s will celebrate ‘Oswaldtide’ on St Oswald’s Day, Friday, August 8, with afternoon teas costing £3, and a raffle. All are welcome. Further details from Sylvia on 0191 385 4815.

At Houghton Older Peoples Enterprise in the Methodist Church Hall at 1pm on Thursday, August 4, Margaret Robertson will talk about ‘Andrew’s Journey Vasculitous UK’.

The next surgery by Shiney Row councillors Anne Lawson, Mel Speding and Geoff Walker will be in Trinity Methodists Church Hall from 10am to 11am on Sunday, August 6. Residents are invited to raise and discuss any relevant issues.

There will be a coffee morning and tombola in St Michael and All Angels parish church from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, August 6, with proceeds for the church choir fund.

The Sunderland Group of the Ramblers Association will be walking an 8.5-mile circular walk from ‘Sunderland Bridge No. 1’, meeting at the bridge off the A167 ‘new’ roundabout near ‘Honest Lawyer Hotel’, then first left on the B6300 to meet leader Brian Myers at 10.30am on Wednesday, August 10.
