Shiney Advice and Resource Project (Sharp) is available and qualified to give advice on benefits and problems with debt and managing your money. Appointments are available in a range of community settings in the Coalfields, Washington and Sunderland East areas by contacting Sharp on 0300 123 1961 or visiting the centre at 17 Beatrice Terrace, Shiney Row.

There will be a display showing colourised vintage photographs about Houghton in the Methodist Church Hall, Mautland Street, from 9.30am-11.30am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and all are welcome.

Christa Clemenson will give an illustrated talk about her experiences in India at Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodists Church hall at 1pm on Thursday.

Old Penshaw Village popular Scarecrow Trail will be from 10am-3.30pm on Saturday. Refreshments will be available in the village hall and there will be a steel band, children’s pony rides and balloon man and other competitions. It will be rounded off with a ceilidh at 7pm in the community centre. Further information from Lesley Sale on 5848098.

The Friends of the Historic Hillside Cemetery Heritage Open Day Display will be in Space 4 in the Newbottle Street Library this year as the church is undergoing roof repair works and is open from 10am-2pm on Saturday. Group members will be present to talk about the ongoing work and latest developments of the restoration.

SPACE 4 will be holding a table-top sale in St Michael Kepier Hall from 10am-noon on Saturday and donations of items would be gratefully accepted. Tables are available at £5 for individual sales with bookings and other information from Christine Britcliffe on 07517 450672.

There will be a coffee morning with the usual homemade produce in St Mary’s Church, West Rainton, with free admission from 10am-noon on Saturday,.

The speaker at the next meeting of Houghton U3A (University of the Third Age) at 2pm on Thursday, September 15, will be Barnard Hope. Outings and visits are planned with new members most welcome.Further details from Bill or Lilian Milburn on 5844677.

There will be another night of fun at Shiney Row St Oswalds with the quiz night at 7pm on Wednesday, September 16. Admission is £4 including pie and peas supper and dessert.

At the History Club past president Graham McGrath, leader of the fundraising committee, outlined several ideas for new events to be included in the future programme of community service to be confirmed nearer the actual dates.
