The number of homeless people in Sunderland is “lower than ever”.

Speaking at a meeting of Sunderland City Council, Coun Graeme Miller, portfolio holder for health, housing
and adult services, said the city was reversing a national trend.

He said: “By attempting to identify cases at the earliest opportunity, homelessness is at an all-time low.

“In 2003/04, the number of homeless acceptances in the city was 894 and this has subsequently fallen to 78, the lowest number ever.”
