Higher fuel bills to hit families

POVERTY-HIT families in the North East will be left the worst off by rocketing fuel bills despite a Government vow to slash energy prices, according to a shadow minister.

Regulator Ofgem said it wanted a “simpler, clearer, fairer” market under reforms that will force energy firms to tell customers about their best electricity and gas deals and cut the number of core tariffs to four per fuel type.

But Caroline Flint, the Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate, said those in the North East, where unemployment is high and homes are less energy efficient, would be the worst affected.
