FAMILIES turned out as Hetton got into the festive spirit when the town’s Christmas lights were turned on.

About 40 people came to the town’s Wellness Centre as civic leaders gathered to flick the switch on lights which cover a huge tree at the site.

Hetton School Band performed carols for the crowd while Santa Claus also made an appearance in his sleigh.

Mayor of Hetton Town Council, Tony Wilkinson, who was joined by the mayor of Sunderland, Coun Stuart Porthouse, and city council leader Coun Paul Watson, said: “Maybe the damp weather’s affected the turnout a bit but thanks to everyone who came.

“A lot of the kids have loved seeing Santa and the whole thing’s been well supported by the town.”
