A women’s group is among community projects that have shared a £5,000 cash boost from a new arts initiative.
The Cultural Spring, an Arts Council-funded project working to increase engagement in five council wards in Sunderland, launched Your Art, a scheme to support local communities to get involved in arts events, earlier this year.
Eight local groups have benefited from the first round of funding, including Sangini, a women’s-led organisation aiming to increase participation in artistic, cultural and social activities among minority communities in Sunderland.
Sangini successfully applied to Your Art for £900 for local artist Miki Zea to work with the group on its Abstract Connections project.
Padma Rao, a board member at Sangini, said: “Miki will work with the group over four half-day workshops which will be based at All Saints Church, Cleadon.
“Each session will look at famous examples of abstract art and the final session will see the women display their work to family and friends.”
