Hebburn is looking festive - despite the wet weather

People from across Hebburn came together to celebrate the countdown to Christmas - despite severe weather.

The Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Alan Smith, and Father Christmas were joined by local residents and families who watched the official switch-on of Hebburn’s festive illuminations in Fountain Partk on Monday.

The Mayor said: “Despite the wintery weather I was delighted to see the community come together to celebrate this very special time of year and to watch town’s colourful displays come to life.

“The event was not damped by the wet weather and I know that the town’s yuletide illuminations will help to spread Christmas cheer to all those in Hebburn throughout the festive season.”

The switch-on had to be scaled back at the last minute due to the gale-force winds and torrential rain.

There was to be entertainment and seasonal songs performed by St Aloysius School Choir and Hebburn Comprehensive School wind band which had to be cancelled.

Hebburn’s lights were the last of the borough’s illuminations to be switched on.

Last Thursday members of the pop group 5ive officially turned on South Shields lights with a performance next to the town’s iconic new digital library The Word in Market Place.

Jarrow has been glowing since Friday.

Next up on the borough’s festive calendar is The Christmas Fair at Haven Point, South Shields, on Saturday and Sunday.

The borough’s annual camel parade will also be taking place on Friday, December 2, with the Three Wise Men parading down Ocean Road, from 5pm. The event will conclude with a fireworks display.
