A HEALTH specialist has told how public response makes all the difference in his job.

Dr Saeed ‘Sid’ Ahmed spoke to the Sunderland Echo at the start of this year’s Best of Health awards.

We are appealing for the public to make a difference by inundating us with nominations and Dr Ahmed told how it’s the public’s response which has made his job so rewarding.

He has a thank you card on his desk at Sunderland Royal Hospital. He said: “It only takes one of these to keep you going for months.”

Dr Ahmed is a kidney specialist who has spent eight years at the renal unit which looks after patients with a poor kidney function. “We help them through a journey from the kidney getting worse to a good outcome of transplant or long-term dialysis.”

The unit gets about 20 transplants a year done at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and has around 3,000 people on the books – but the number is growing by about seven per cent.

Job satisfaction for Sid comes through the patient response. “From when I started my career, it has been the patient feedback, the stories and the journeys they have been on and it gives us a morale boost.

“We get to know the patients really well. We become not only their doctors but almost part of the family.

“When people can reflect back on what they can do now and could not do before, it is more the emotional aspects. You can see people blossom. You can see them go back to society and engage in society.”

Dr Ahmed is one of hundreds of people working in the health profession in the Wearside area, all deserving of awards. We want you to nominate your own personal favourites.

Perhaps it’s your favourite GP, an outstanding nurse or a popular carer.

All entries must be received by March 20. A panel of judges will meet around a week later to narrow down the field. All those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, April 16.

We want you to nominate your favourites in each of the categories listed on this page.
