A POPULAR nurse was moved to tears after being nominated for an Echo Best of Health award.

Kathryn Miller is a specialist nurse in cardiac rehabilitation based at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Cardiac rehab is the Cinderella job and often in the background. I am very humbled to have been nominated.

And when she found out a grateful patient had put her in the running for our Registered Nurse of the Year title, she said: “I am very stunned and actually quite emotional.

“Cardiac rehab is the Cinderella job and often in the background. I am very humbled to have been nominated.”

Kathryn has been in the health profession for 25 years, always based in Sunderland.

She was worked in the cardiology section for the past 18 years and has a job which involves seeing all patients who come through the department.

She works with people who have had heart problems such as a heart attack. She assesses them, explains what has happened and helps to counsel them.

“We help them so they understand what is going on.”

She is also part of a team which makes sure patients get the best follow-up care, and said the most satisfying part of the job was “seeing people when they first come in and are really ill, to going out the door with their family and getting their life back”.

The Best of Health awards have already had some impressive entries but we want even more.

It’s easy to nominate and you can do it either by using the form on this page or by going online and nominating on the Sunderland Echo website. Feel free to put forward as many of your favourite health workers as you think deserve honours.

So whether it’s your favourite GP, an outstanding nurse or a popular carer, there’s a category for all parts of our health profession. All entries must be received by March 20. After that, a panel of judges will meet around a week later to begin the difficult task of narrowing down the field. They will draw up a shortlist in each of our categories. And all those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on April 16.
