TWO ground-breaking cancer treatments are to be made available to patients across Wearside after a major funding boost.
The North of England Cancer Drug Approvals Group (NECDAG) has agreed to use money from its cancer drug fund, made available by the Government.
The new treatments are Vinflunine, for patients with bladder cancer, and Sunitiub, for rare pancreatic neuroendocrine cancers.
Earlier this month, it was announced the North East would receive £11.3million for cancer drugs not funded by the NHS during 2011/12. It follows an interim allocation of £2.8million received last autumn.
Ken Bremner, chairman of NECDAG, and chief executive of City Hospitals Sunderland, said: “We are very pleased to have this additional money to use on new cancer treatments because it means we are able to provide drugs that we would otherwise not have been able to.”
