POLITICIAN Sharon Hodgson has backed calls to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients on Wearside.

The MP – chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer – made the pledge at an event in Parliament held by the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity.

It is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and eradication of the disease.

Mrs Hodgson said: “I was shocked to hear that the UK’s breast cancer survival rates still fall below other European countries.

“As a result, we’re letting more than 1,000 lives slip away from us every year.

“More than 48,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK, and I want to make sure that everyone in Westminster and my constituency knows we can do much more.”
