Classes where fitness is fun

Have your say

TRAMPOLINES, piñatas and other fun games are helping Wearside women to shed the pounds.

Entrepreneur Jonathan Hair’s innovative new exercise programme is taking the city by storm, with hundreds of women signing up to get in shape with his fun-filled fitness regime.

The 29-year-old, of South Hylton, is celebrating a year of success after launching Skinnypigs Women’s Fitness Class, which runs at several venues across the city.

After spending years working in gyms and as a personal trainer, the fitness guru decided to tailor-make his own effective package to help women get in shape and lose weight.

He wanted to combine high-energy exercise with body sculpting elements held in a relaxed, fun and informal environment.

Jonathan said: “I’d been a personal trainer for a while in gyms and I kept seeing the same exercise classes being done over and over again. They were always the same – body pump, legs, bums, tums.

“As well as being boring, the classes were always cardio and that does nothing to firm people up so I decided to use high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in a unique way.”

As part of the classes, women are paired up and are expected to carry out nine tasks, which include a space hopper race and taking it in turns to play piñata, replacing the traditional donkey with a fat man.

His classes have proved popular, and Jonathan said: “I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response we’ve had locally.

Danielle White, 24, of Sunderland, has been attending Skinnypigs for 12 months.

In that time, she has shed almost four stone, slimming down from a size 22 to a size 14.

Danielle said: “I’ve tried many different classes over the years and always got bored, but I’m totally hooked on Skinnypigs.

“I’ve managed to lose over three stone over the last year, and I put it all down to the classes. I’ve also made some great friends along the way.”
