RESIDENTS are urged to have their say on new licensing and planning rules for shared houses in Durham City.
Durham County Council is considering new licensing and planning rules for houses in multiple occupation (HMO).
HMOs have three or more people forming two or more households, where areas such as the kitchen or bathrooms are shared.
There is a mandatory licensing scheme for larger HMOs, which covers 360 properties.
The council’s proposals would extended it to include all HMOs – a further 1,100 city centre properties.
The proposed changes to the rules would mean people would need planning permission to convert large homes into a HMO.
The consultation runs until May 28. Visit www.durham.gov.uk/consultation
