Harvest festivals are a feast of giving to others

The leaves on the trees are starting to change colour and fall to the ground.

This means it is that time of year when the annual harvest festivals take place.

The word harvest comes from the Old English Haerfest meaning ‘autumn’.

In this country the harvest festival, also known as harvest home, normally takes place towards the end of September or, the beginning of October.

So for this week’s nostalgia picture special, we thought we would do some ‘digging’ ourselves into our archives and came up with a sackful of harvest festival photographs.

Before the kids or grandchildren ask for their harvest festival contributions to take to school, have a peek at our photographs.

We have pupils pictured with their baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables ready to be delivered to nearby pensioners, also included are the plays and performances which are all part of the harvest service.
