‘Great news for Sunderland’ as Amazon delivers 200 jobs for Wearside

The on-line giant will employ 20 people directly at its new delivery station in Cherry Blossom Way, Washington, and is working with nine delivery firms which will be hiring around 200 drivers.

Jamie Stephenson, UK Director for Amazon Logistics, said: “Amazon Logistics adds capacity and flexibility to Amazon’s delivery network, enabling us to meet the delivery needs of customers.”

Sunderland City Council deputy leader Coun Harry Trueman said the news was proof Wearside was a perfect venue for delivery firms.

“As with other warehousing and logistics operations, Amazon’s decision is a recognition of Washington’s strategic location in the region’s transport network,” he said.

“ASDA has warehousing facilities in Washington, and Vantec has nearly one million sq ft. These and other companies have chosen Washington because of easy access to the A1 and the A19 transport corridor.”

SAFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson is chairman of the North East Chamber of Commerce’s Sunderland committee: “Amazon are a global brand and it is fantastic news that they are set to open their latest delivery station in Washington,” he said.

“This is not only beneficial for Amazon customers in Sunderland but for the whole North East.

“This further enhances the area’s reputation and we look forward to welcoming Amazon to our business family.”

Chamber chief executive James Ramsbotham added: “This is great news for Sunderland and the surrounding areas.

“The multiplier effect this will have on businesses around the North East is very positive and we’re hopeful the benefits will be far-reaching.”
