A FORMER bar worker is set to spearhead a fund-raising drive to help the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
Rebecca Scott, 24, from Murton, has been appointed as the Alzheimer’s Society community fund-raising officer for the North East and Cumbria.
The former Easington Community School and Bede Sixth Form pupil said the charity was close to the heart as her late grandmother, Grace Salkeld, suffered from the condition.
She said: “I know from personal experience that it is a devastating disease and that makes me doubly determined to do my gran proud with the Alzheimer’s Society.
“She was a huge part of me growing up, and I was one of her main carers in her last few years.
“Seeing that decline in her will really spur me on with Alzheimer’s Society. I just wish she was still here to see me working for a charity that is determined to make life better for people with dementia and their carers.”
Rebecca added: “It’s a pretty big challenge ahead of me but I am looking forward to doing everything I can to raise money for the charity and raise awareness to tackle the stigma that is attached to dementia.”
