A GOLFER was in a critical condition last night after suffering a heart attack at Hetton-le-Hill Golf Course.

The 73-year-old, from Peterlee, was enjoying a round when he collapsed at the Houghton course.

Paramedics managed to restart the man’s heart at the scene thanks to a combination of drugs, a defibrillator and a new piece of life-saving kit carried by the air ambulance that applies external pressure to the heart.

The man was then flown to Middlesbrough’s James Cook Hospital in the Guardian of the North helicopter, where his condition was described as life-threatening.
