Golden dream over for Silksworth bowler David Bolt at the Commonwealth Games

England blew a golden chance in the men’s four and skip Jamie Chestney admitted there would be some regrets at the manner of their semi-final defeat to Scotland.

Having beaten New Zealand earlier in the day, the quartet of Chestney, Louis Ridout, Bolt and Sam Tolchard raced into a 7-0 lead against the defending Commonwealth champions.

From there, they appeared to completely collapse, losing eight straight ends to fall 12-7 behind and they never recovered, eventually going down 19-10.

And while they will have a chance to put that right against Wales in the bronze medal match, it was a tough defeat to take for Chestney and co.

He said: “It’s easier said than done but we didn’t play tight enough against them. We started off really well, got a bit of momentum and then let them back in.

“Whatever it was, but between us, any of us we couldn’t get that bowl to get us back on the front foot soon enough.

“We got back to give ourselves a chance with a couple of ends to go but we’d left ourselves too much to do. It was just not enough on the night.”

Chestney is the only survivor from the men’s fours team that took silver in Glasgow four years ago, with Scotland their conquerors on both occasions.

And he admitted it would be hard to turn their focus to the clash with Wales.

He added: “It will be better going home with something than nothing but it’s disappointing to be so close and fall short. Bronze at the minute doesn’t sound too appealing, I have to admit.”

After beating New Zealand, Bolt had said: “If you could ever put your finger on what makes a good team performance, it was that. If one of us missed, the other backed them up.”
