The person who died after being hit by a train on the Newcastle to Sunderland rail line was a 14-year-old girl, police have said.
The schoolgirl died at the scene near Gateshead International Stadium at around 7pm on Sunday.
British Transport Police (BTP) said there were no suspicious circumstances and the family of the girl, who was from Newcastle, have been informed.
A BTP spokesman said: “We were called to the line close to Gateshead Stadium Metro Station at 7.03pm on Sunday September 20 to reports of a person being struck by a train.
“Colleagues from Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service also attended, and a 14-year-old girl from Newcastle was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Her death is not being treated as suspicious, and her family have been informed.
“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
