GENTOO staff are backing a campaign to create a new £2million cancer support and education centre for the North East.

The charity Fighting All Cancers Together (Fact) has launched a campaign called We want 2, asking people, organisations and businesses across the region to raise £2,000 apiece as part of the first phase of a fund-raising drive to hit a £400,000 target.

Sunderland’s Gentoo Construction will oversee the building of the Gateshead facility, and it has named Fact as its parent group’s chosen charity and raised almost £2,400 for it.

Managing director Allan Thompson said: “I have been amazed by the efforts of staff across the group who have taken time to help us reach our target.

“This type of activity is another way that we prove we’re more than just a construction company.

“Our supply chain has also played a big part and donated almost £1,400 in prizes that were auctioned off. A massive thanks goes out to everyone who has helped us reach this target and for such a great cause.”

The planned centre will provide a range of services for people with cancer and their families and friends. It would be the first community facility of its kind, offering support, practical help and social opportunities in a non-medical environment.

Fact chief executive and founder Joanne Smith said: “We are delighted to have the support of Gentoo as one of our £2,000 challengers.

“As a local charity, we value the support of local people and organisations, and this exciting building project relies on this support.

“The centre, and the services it will offer, are very much in demand, and needed by so many people affected by cancer in the North East.”
