GCSE results: Seaham School's top teamwork between staff and students lead to 'fantastic' grades

The last year group to complete their education at Seaham School of Technology have collected their results.

The final work is being carried out to the new school - to be called Seaham High School - which will open on Thursday, September 8, as move is made from Burnhall Drive to the former Seaham Colliery site.

Today, Seaham Town Hall welcomed the last year 11 to take their GCSEs at the old complex as they collected their results.

A total of 67% of its students achieved grade C or higher in both England and maths and 61% achieved "far more good grades" including those two subjects.

Headteacher David Shield said this year's GCSE students were "fantastic."

He said: "These excellent results have been down to the dedication and huge effort over many years of both students and staff, who worked so well together.

"High quality teaching and students eager to learn were also key ingredients in the success of these results.

Megan Gillibrand, from Seaham, got an A*, five As, two Bs and a C and now plans to take A-levels at Sunderland College to take biology, chemistry, and psychology with the aim of a career in medical science.

She said: "I was really happy when I opened them.

"I did better in some subjects than I expected."

She will be joined at the college by Eve Green, who will also take chemistry, biology and psychology, who would like to become a midwife or a nurse.

She gained four A*s, five As and a B.

"I was over the moon. I expected to do well, but I've done so much better," she said.

"It was a relief to open them, but overwhelming."

James Steel achieved an A*, six As a B and a C and would like to become an engineer.

He plans to study maths, physics, and history at Sunderland College.

"I was happy.

"It was more than I expected."

A total of seven A*s and three As were picked up by Charlotte Harriman, which will help her to go and study maths, psychology, biology and chemistry at Durham Sixth Form, as she plans to take a career in medicine.

She said: "I was amazed, I couldn't believe."

Mum Hillary was on hand to offer support.

Charlotte added: "She said she was really proud of me."

Alisha Gibbs also got seven A*s as well as four As and will go to Sunderland College to take biology, chemistry, psychology and English literature.

Her mum Michelle was also there to offer support.

"I was happy and I thought I'd done all right.

"Mum said she was really proud."

Jake Cheetham gained five Cs and an A* and will go on to take travel and tourism at Sunderland College.

When he began the school, he was predicted a D in English, but upped his mark through help from the school

"I was nervous, really,

"I'm so pleaded I got my C in English and in maths and that's better than I hoped to do when I started."
