OLD pipes under the streets of Wearside are to be replaced.
Northern Gas Networks, the North East’s gas distribution firm, has announced the £91.5million package to ensure the safe and reliable supply of gas to the region’s homes and businesses for the next few decades.
Old metal underground gas mains will be replaced with modern plastic pipes.
In Sunderland, a total of 16km will be replaced at a cost of £1.5million.
In County Durham, 33km of piping will be changed, costing £2.3million.
Howard Forster, Northern Gas Networks director of programme investment, said: “This major investment package is good news for families and businesses in the North East, as it will deliver a safer, more reliable gas network.
“The new pipes are far more durable, and will serve the area well for decades to come.
“Customers will be kept informed of where and when schemes will be taking place throughout the year.
“We will work closely with local communities to minimise any inconvenience arising from work.”
