His genitals and bottom lip had been hacked off, his stomach slashed and his mane was cut off.

The sheer brutality of the killing left our readers shocked and disgusted – with hundreds of people taking to social media to express their horror and to plead for anyone with information to come forward.

Bobby was discovered in a field off Cleadon Lane on November 3.

A crowdfunding page has now raised almost £4,000 for a reward to help catch the killer, with donations coming in from across the country.

One person wrote: “These ‘people’ need to be caught and handed extremely severe sentences. This poor little fellow was probably enticed over to them, instinctively trusting a human as he had no cause to fear. Imagine the surprise, shock and sense of betrayal – never mind the agony – that this little chap felt. And presumably his friends saw the entire episode and could not contemplate what they were seeing take place.”

An investigation has been launched by the police and RSPCA.
