HOW to fill that gap between the end of the season and the start of the European Championships?
To the non-football supporter, it seems no time at all but to those of us who live and breathe the beautiful game, it is a bleak month.
One way to pass the time is by cracking out the DVDs and getting swept away in memories.
Good news then that you can do just that with the help of the Echo.
Part one of UEFA’s The Best of European Football treats us to a journey from the great Real Madrid sides of Di Stefano and Puskas, via the elation and ultimate heartbreak of Euro 96 to the recent dominance by English sides of the Champions League.
Straight away, the viewer cannot help but try to guess what will come next and seemingly every great match that is met with a nod of approval and the declaration, “This is good, this one”.
They are all good. The great French side of 2000, the Dutch with Gullit and co and brilliance of Barca.
The underdogs prevailing, like the Republic of Ireland downing England, Staeau Bucharest in 1986 against Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen.
Here too are the moments when legends were born.
Wayne Rooney’s debut hat-trick for Manchester United; Jose Mourinho announcing himself to the UK when thundering down the touchline to celebrate his Porto side’s winner at Old Trafford.
There’s Steven Gerrard dragging Liverpool past Olympiakos and sending Andy Gray into hysterics.
For every moment of glory, there is an equal and opposite moment of heartbreak and this DVD has it all.
Chelsea fans will not wish to be reminded of John Terry’s Moscow slip-up and England fans will look away when Gareth Southgate steps up to the spot.
And for this Liverpool supporter, a certain game in Istanbul a few years ago was the perfect way to round it off.
Part two, please!
