Four people taken to hospital following crash in Sunderland

Four people have been taken to hospital following a two-car crash in Sunderland this evening.

Faber Road in Southwick was closed off at the junction with Shakespeare Street following an incident involving a Ford Focus and Peugeot 308 shortly before 6pm.

Fire crews from Farringdon station were sent to the scene, with four people having to be cut out of the cars.

They were all taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by ambulances with suspected head and neck injuries.

Drivers were told to use alternative routes while the road was closed off.

Northumbria Police tweeted: "Faber Road in Sunderland is currently closed at the junction with Shakespeare Street due to a collision.

"Please use an alternative route until cleared. Thank you."
