Class A Barquentine Loa, Class A Topsail Schooner Oosterschelde, Class A Gaff Schooner Gulden Leeuw and Class B Topsail Schooner Skonnerten Jylland have recently committed to coming to Sunderland next year. Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Coun John Kelly said: “The attendance of these fantastic ships gives even more opportunity for anyone who is looking for an adventure to get involved. “Taking part gives participants much more than a week of adventure.

"They will meet new people, learn new skills, it looks great on a CV and I’m sure creates memories to last a lifetime.

"I encourage anyone interested in taking part or even perhaps thinking of a Christmas present to remember, either for themselves or someone else, to register with the project and make the most of the opportunity.” Tall Ship trainees will spend 7 nights on-board one of the participating vessels on a voyage to Esbjerg in Denmark from Friday, July 13, until Friday, July 20, 2018.

In Esbjerg trainees will take part in the festival-like Crew Parade and Prize-Giving Ceremony before flying back to the UK.Sail training is open to anyone, regardless of ability and experience and trainees do not need to have any previous sailing experience.

As long as you're enthusiastic and prepared to learn, that's what matters. There are currently opportunities to apply for a bursary to help cover the costs but this scheme is only open until 5pm on Sunday, November 12. Applicants must be over 15 years old on the date of sailing (14 July 2018). Anyone younger than 18 will need permission from a parent or guardian.
