BRIAN Carr was the victim of a brutal attack while he worked as a paramedic in Sunderland city centre.

The Sunderland worker for North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) had been in a first-responder car when he was called to an emergency in Norfolk Street.

Now retired from the service, Brian, from Sunderland, said: “Turned out the guy I was trying to help was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

“I called for a back-up crew to come and help and was holding him up when they arrived. But, all of a sudden, he headbutted the woman paramedic and then punched me in the face.

“That wasn’t the first time I was attacked, but it was definitely the most serious.

“I do feel sorry for those still working in the service who have to put up with this kind of thing.

“I know they’ve got cameras in the ambulances now, so we can only hope that helps.”
