Members of Durham Mums on the Run have signed up for the Siglion Sunderland City 10K on Sunday, May 1, and Steve Cram visited the Maiden Castle sports centre to offer them some encouragement.

The group was founded as a day-time running group for women and offers coaching, with a particular focus on providing opportunities for beginners and to new mums who want to get back into exercise.

Many of the mums bring their children to the sessions and some even push them around the track in their buggies. The initiative is led by Kate Macpherson, a Durham mum and qualified running coach.

She said: “Durham Mums on the Run caters for women of all ages, experiences and abilities. As well as new mums, we have grandmothers and other ladies who simply want to lead a more active lifestyle and see running as a way of doing that. I challenged our members to set a target and am so pleased that such a large number signed up for the Siglion Sunderland City 10K.

Steve said:“Durham Mums on the Run is a fantastic initiative and a great way for women to start running in a really welcoming, inclusive environment. We look forward to welcoming the ladies at the Siglion Sunderland City 10K, though I’m afraid that they will have to leave the buggies and children with friends and family while they run on 1 May!”
