Eboue is a free agent after leaving Turkish side Galatasary last summer and has been invited to train with Sam Allardyce’s men.

However, it is understood that at this stage, Eboue is only at Sunderland with a view to keeping fit, rather than being on trial with the club.

The 32-year-old had been keen to return to the Premier League during the January transfer window - and made a come-and-get-me plea to former club Arsenal.

But the right-back remained unattached after falling out of favour with ex-Italy boss Cesare Prandelli at Galatasary last season.

While Sunderland are purely allowing Eboue to get in shape at this stage, the Black Cats would be able to sign any free agents available, despite the transfer window closing last month.

Sunderland only registered 23 out of a maximum of 25 senior players with the Premier League after the transfer deadline - leaving two spaces free for possible Bosman additions.

Boss Allardyce had been keen to bring in a right-back during the window and could make a change in that position for this weekend’s visit of Manchester United.

Billy Jones has struggled in each of the last two games, with his mistake allowing Liverpool to net their second in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.

And that could open the door for on-loan Spurs full-back DeAndre Yedlin to take Jones’ place against Man United.
