THE great and the good of the football world have joined Sunderland fans in reacting to the news of Gus Poyet’s sacking.

There are mixed reactions to the dismissal of the 47-year-old Uruguayan, who was hailed as a hero last season – but had many fans baying for his blood after the weekend’s dire 0-4 drubbing at the hands of Aston Villa.

DAVID JONES ‏@DavidJonesSky: I like Gus Poyet, I thought he was the right man for the job and I’m really sorry it hasn’t worked out for him.

Chris Kamara ‏@chris_kammy: Reports are saying Gus Poyet has been sacked. Who do they turn to now ???!

Gary Lineker ‏@GaryLineker: Sunderland have sacked Gus Poyet. Rumour has it he may not be too heartbroken.

#ZidaneTurn @solly_feni1: I feel sorry for Gus Poyet in all honesty.. He’s a top bloke. Defended Suarez in racism row too back in 2011/12.

jack faulkner @JackFaulknerCFC: Feel for gus poyet he did well for Sunderland and worked miracles last year to keep them up deserves a better club than that

Craig Hope @CraigHope_DM: I imagine Gus Poyet will be relieved. Have felt for a while he didn’t want to be at SAFC. It brought out the worst in him at times.

Keith Fitzpatrick @KeithMacGP: Delighted that apologist Poyet has been sacked. Sunderland appointing Advocaat is just as bad though. Another one.
