Football fan who was dragged under train ‘responding great’ to treatment

Darren White, from Peterlee, has had an operation on his foot and his thigh has been re-aligned after he was involved in a horrific accident at Bexleyheath Station in London.

The 41-year-old East Durham College caretaker is being treated at London’s King’s College Hospital.

Darren suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and ribs, crushed pelvis, punctured lungs and lost five toes and skin from his back after he is thought to have collapsed while boarding a train around 7.30am on October 26.

He was on his way to watch his beloved Newcastle United play against Tottenham Hotspur.

David Wilkinson, 25, of Peterlee, whose wife Lauren is a daughter of Darren’s partner Karen Rodgers, has been keeping well-wishers updated on the Darren White NUFC Facebook page.

He said Darren was meant to go for an operation on Friday, but this was delayed due to other emergencies.

But his surgery went ahead on Sunday and David said: “The operation went really well on his foot and his thigh has been lined back up.

“He is heavily sedated and family have been asked to stick to visiting time to make sure he gets plenty of rest.”

David said Darren is “doing really well” and “responding great” and was due for an operation on his chest on Tuesday.
