Shirts, scarves, flowers and a Sunderland flag have been tied to the railings on Wearmouth Bridge.

The 52-year-old was a devoted Black Cats fan, and had been a familiar face at matches home and away for years - even attending pre-season tours abroad.

He has been missing since he left his home in St Christopher’s Road last week.

David, who is about 5ft 7in-tall, was last seen in Silksworth Lane, near Sainsbury’s, wearing a black three-quarter-length coat, a blue T-shirt and jeans.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police are continuing to carry out inquiries to trace David Dowell who went missing from his home in Sunderland on June 22.

“Officers are investigating a number of possible leads and those inquiries have led officers to the area of the Wearmouth Bridge.

“Those inquiries are ongoing and the Marine Unit are assisting with searches in and around the River Wear.

“Officers are also working very closely with David’s family at this difficult time.

“Officers would still appeal for anyone who saw David in the days leading up to his disappearance to get in touch on 101.”
