COLOURFUL floats will once again journey through Houghton as part of the town’s feast celebrations.

The carnival parade and procession takes place on Saturday, October 5, with organisers now opening entries for the event, with this year’s theme being “all the fun of the fair”.

A procession of classic cars and historic steam engines will also journey through the town as part of the festivities.

John Bloomfield, chairman of Houghton Round Table, which is organising the parade, said: “There are about 40 classic cars, 10 steam engines and about 15 or 16 floats in the parade so there’s quite a bit going on.

“There are usually at least 1,000 people who come to watch as well and the streets in Houghton are always packed.

“People seem to think that they need to go to huge lengths to put a float in, but they don’t,” he added.

“There are plenty of walking groups who get involved with their banners while wearing their uniforms as well.”

Houghton Feast originated as a dedication service at Michaelmas to the parish church of St Michael and All Angels in the town.

The parade begins at 2pm on October 5, with participants asked to meet at the rear of Houghton Library in Station Road by 1.30pm.

The parade finishes at Kepier Academy, in Dairy Lane.
