A CHESTER-LE-STREET firm has been fined after a digger struck an underground cable.

Newcastle Magistrates Court heard Northern Construction Solutions Ltd was working as a sub-contractor for Egger (UK) Ltd when the cable strike occurred at Egger’s Hexham site.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigators found Egger had failed to update a diagram showing the location of cables, and Northern Construction Solutions had accepted the diagram, despite knowing changes had been made.

Both firms admitted a breach of safety regulations. Egger was fined £8,000 and Northern Construction Solutions Ltd was fined £4,000.

HSE Inspector Andrea Robbins said:“Nobody was hurt. However, the potential for serious, even fatal, injuries was foreseeable.”
