FIREFIGHTERS have spent a day battling a blaze at a household waste recycling plant.
Fire crews were called to Hetton Lyons Industrial Estate yesterday at about 1.20pm after a 50 metre by 70 metre compound at Altrac Waste Management caught alight.
Six crews and two aerial platform ladders tackled the blaze, which had caught hold of a pile of household waste.
Firefighters remained at the scene overnight to make sure the blaze did not re-ignite.
They were expected to continue damping down the site into this afternoon.
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The crews have been on rotation all night with it being a deep site.
“They will probably remain there for the rest of the day to make sure the blaze does not start up again.”
The fire service said it is unsure at this stage what sparked the blaze.
Police were also called to the scene yesterday to make sure that traffic in the area moved safely.
Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles around.
