A WOMAN sparked a rescue operation after climbing onto the wrong side of the Wearmouth Bridge’s railings.

Firefighters and police were called to the bridge at around 5.20pm yesterday after calls reporting concerns for the woman.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said the woman was threatening to jump.

Crews from Sunderland Central fire station were joined at the scene by a rope rescue team from South Shields and Hebburn and a swift water rescue team from Byker.

Firefighters wearing safety gear reached the 30-year-old and attached a harness, leading her back to the right side of the bridge.

She was then helped by waiting police officers and paramedics and taken to hospital for treatment.
