Firefighters rescue foal

A FOAL which fell into a drain chamber was rescued by firefighters.

The animal became trapped after falling head first into the partly uncovered chamber in a large field at the rear of the Stella Gill industrial estate, Pelton, near Chester-le-Street.

Firefighters from High Handenhold and Bishop Auckland stations used special sling equipment to winch the foal free on Saturday.

“It had gone in forwards and couldn’t reverse out,” said Watch Manager Richard Bambrough.

“We have a metal strap to pull the sling under the animal first, and we can then lift it clear.”
