TWO passengers had to be cut free from a taxi crash.

The men, aged in their 20s and 40s, were in the Skoda Octavia when it hit a lamppost in Whitburn Road, Cleadon, yesterday.

Nine firefighters from Fuwell and Hebburn stations were called to the scene shortly before 2pm.

They used specialist cutting equipment to free the men, who were taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with suspected spinal injuries.

The driver, a man in his 60s, managed to free himself from the taxi and was then taken to South Tyneside Hospital.
