FORTY firefighting jobs and 20 backroom staff are to be lost in the next four years due to Government cuts.

County Durham and Darlington Fire Authority has set its 2011/12 budget at £29.863million, down £1.42million from last year.

Leaders face a 9.5 per cent drop in Government grant, which they say is one of the highest reductions of all fire authorities in England.

Job losses among uniformed staff are expected to be mainly at its Durham headquarters.
