Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has shared these photos of one of its appliances in the wake of the attack, which happened as one of its crews from its Rainton Bridge fire station were dealing with a bin shed fire at Hetton Wellness Centre.

The side of the truck was left splattered with eggs following the incident, sparking a call from service bosses for troublemakers to think again about their bad behaviour.

A spokesperson said: “It might seem like a bit of harmless fun but this kind of behaviour can be really dangerous and could cause an accident.

"Don't egg emergency service vehicles.”

They added the hashtag #ShowSomeRespect as they posted their message via social media.

Officers patrolled at trouble hotspots and asked residents and business to get in touch to report disorder, with the action following on from another order imposed the weekend before, which resulted in a “significant reduction” in the number of incidents in the area.
