Fire dog Spencer takes part in North East search and rescue operation

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service's search and rescue dog Spencer has travelled to Yorkshire this week to help search and rescue operations.

The springer spaniel was called to assist after an explosion destroyed a house at Haxby, North Yorkshire.

Spencer is trained in disciplines such as working at height, rope access and confined spaces.

He has acute sniffing skills to quickly locate live casualties who are injured or trapped in collapsed buildings.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Chris Lowther, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Spencer is a valuable asset to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and we are more than happy to help our colleagues in North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in dealing with this difficult incident in York yesterday.

"Spencer and his handler will be available to our colleagues in North Yorkshire as long as required.”
