A MAN had to be rescued by firefighters after falling through the roof of a derelict building.

Crews from Fulwell, South Shields and Sunderland city centre fire stations were called out to Sunderland Metal Europa Works in Woodbine Terrace, Pallion, at about 3.40pm yesterday after reports a man had fallen through a hole.

The rescue crews found the man had fallen 4.5m through a sheet of ply-board placed over a skylight in a two-storey building.

Firefighters used ropes to get to the man, who was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
