Fire centre still empty

A DEAL to convert a mothballed control centre into a fire service headquarters has been delayed once again.

Durham and Darlington Fire Brigade chiefs have been in talks with Department for Communities and Local Government officials for months about converting the North East Fire Control Centre, in Belmont, Durham.

The current situation is costing taxpayers more than £100,000 a month.

It was hoped a deal could be reached by late October and when that did not happen, by December,

But John Hewitt, the brigade’s director of corporate rescources, has said he expects no agreement to be met until the new year.

The facility, which could eventually cost £46million, has stood empty since last year.
