It has now been extinguished by officers who remained on site for a couple of hours to remove water at the premises.

The blaze started in an office due to an electrical fault shortly after 9am.

Smoke spread to a number of other offices.

Watch manager Les Thompson, of Sunderland Central, said: “Thankfully the fire didn’t spread because it was contained by the sprinkler system, but there has been a lot of water damage.

“Most of the work from us was as part of a salvage operation.

“No-one was in the office because it’s the weekend and the two members of personnel who were on the shop floor had evacuated before we got there.”
