HUNDREDS of people have been fined for polluting the environment.

It has been revealed that Durham County Council’s neighbourhood wardens issued more than 600 fixed penalty notices during the past year, in the drive to clean up the county.

A total of 461 fines were given out to litter offenders, with cigarette butts being a distinct problem.

A further 148 went to dirty dog owners who failed to pick up after their pet.
