Fears over rail increase

PROTESTS were due to take place today against fare increases on the region’s railways.

Transport groups have warned the predicted six per cent increase will harm the region’s chances of climbing out of recession and hit commuters badly.

The controversial move would mean fares will rise three times faster than earnings in the North East.

Protests and awareness campaigns are set to be held at stations across the country, including Newcastle Central Station, as ministers prepare to announce fare rises, which are due to take effect in January.
