EMERGENCY services were called to rescue a man who was threatening to jump off the Wearmouth Bridge.

The alarm was raised shortly before 2am yesterday when the “distressed” 24-year-old was spotted on the wrong side of the barrier.

Northumbria Police and five fire appliances attended the scene.

As police officers calmed the man down, firefighters used rope-rescue equipment to reach him.

The man was unharmed and taken into police custody.
